What you need to play
Before joining a ReadySet experience, participants should have:
- A modern iPhone or Android smartphone
- The latest version of the ReadySet app
- A stable internet connection (Wi-Fi or mobile data)
- Location services enabled for location-based gameplay
- A charged battery — gameplay can be camera and GPS heavy
Participants do not need to create an account. They join using an event code shared by the organizer.

Android requirements
ReadySet supports most modern Android smartphones running a recent version of Android.

Improving GPS accuracy
GPS performance is usually better:
- Outdoors
- In open areas
- Away from underground spaces
- With stable internet access
Dense buildings or poor connectivity may temporarily affect location accuracy.
Background location & battery settings
ReadySet needs to keep tracking location while the app is in the background so checkpoints register even if a participant locks their screen between activities. Aggressive battery savers can suspend the app and stop location updates.
On iPhone
- Open Settings → ReadySet and set Location to While Using the App (or Always for the duration of the event)
- Turn on Precise Location
- Open Settings → General → Background App Refresh and make sure it's on for ReadySet
- Open Settings → Battery and disable Low Power Mode during gameplay (it limits background activity and GPS)
On Android
- Open Settings → Apps → ReadySet → Permissions → Location and choose Allow all the time
- Choose Precise (not Approximate) location
- Open Settings → Apps → ReadySet → Battery and set it to Unrestricted (Samsung: 'Don't put app to sleep'; Xiaomi/OPPO: disable battery optimization for ReadySet)
- Disable any 'Adaptive Battery' or aggressive power-saving mode while the event is running
- On Samsung devices, remove ReadySet from 'Sleeping apps' and 'Deep sleeping apps' under Device care → Battery → Background usage limits
Camera permissions for QR codes & photo checkpoints
Some ReadySet experiences use the camera for QR-coded checkpoints, photo challenges, or video tasks. If camera access isn't granted, the activity screen will open but stay blank, or the QR scanner won't detect codes.
Camera access is needed when an experience includes:
- QR-coded checkpoints (scan to unlock the activity)
- Photo challenges (capture a moment as part of the task)
- Video tasks (record a short clip)
- AR-enhanced activities (optional, when supported by the device)
iPhone setup
- When ReadySet asks for camera access on first use, tap Allow
- If you missed it: Settings → ReadySet → Camera → On
- For photo uploads: Settings → ReadySet → Photos → Add Photos Only (or Full Access)
- Settings → ReadySet → Microphone → On if the experience records video with sound
Android setup
- When ReadySet asks for camera access on first use, tap Allow
- If you missed it: Settings → Apps → ReadySet → Permissions → Camera → Allow only while using the app
- Settings → Apps → ReadySet → Permissions → Photos and videos → Allow
- Settings → Apps → ReadySet → Permissions → Microphone → Allow only while using the app (if video tasks need audio)
Troubleshooting
- If the camera screen is black, fully close ReadySet and re-open it
- Close other apps that might be using the camera (FaceTime, Zoom, Snapchat)
- Confirm the lens isn't covered by a case, finger, or screen protector
- For QR scans, hold the phone 15–25 cm from the code with steady, even light
- If a permission prompt never appeared, reinstall the app and reopen — first launch re-triggers the prompt
A note on AR
Some optional activities may use AR-enhanced interactions. AR is never required for core gameplay, and not every device supports every AR feature — the rest of the experience plays normally on devices that don't support it.
Troubleshooting: GPS not working
If checkpoints aren't activating or your blue dot is jumping around, run through these quick fixes before flagging it to the organizer.
Universal quick fixes
- Step outside or move away from tall buildings — GPS needs a clear view of the sky
- Toggle airplane mode on for 5 seconds, then off, to force the radios to reconnect
- Fully close ReadySet from the app switcher and re-open it
- Walk a few meters past the checkpoint and back so a fresh GPS reading registers
iPhone
- Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services: toggle off, wait 5 seconds, toggle back on
- Settings → ReadySet → Location: confirm Precise Location is on
- Settings → Battery: turn off Low Power Mode while playing
- Settings → General → Background App Refresh: confirm it's on for ReadySet
- If GPS is still stuck, restart the iPhone (hold side + volume up, slide to power off)
Android
- Settings → Location: toggle off, wait 5 seconds, toggle back on
- Settings → Location → Location services → Google Location Accuracy: turn on
- Settings → Apps → ReadySet → Permissions → Location: choose Allow all the time and Precise
- Settings → Apps → ReadySet → Battery: set to Unrestricted
- Samsung: Device care → Battery → Background usage limits: remove ReadySet from Sleeping & Deep sleeping apps
- If GPS is still stuck, restart the phone
